Salisbury Steak Recipe

This Salisbury Steak is a classic American dish that features juicy beef patties smothered in a rich, savory onion and mushroom gravy. It’s a comfort food favorite that’s easy to make and always satisfying.

Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably seasoned)
1/4 cup milk
1 small onion (finely chopped)
1 clove garlic (minced)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil (for searing)
For the Gravy:
1 tablespoon olive oil (or butter)
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
1 cup mushrooms (sliced, optional but recommended)
2 cups beef broth (low-sodium)
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (to thicken the gravy)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions
1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 3/4-inch thick.
2. Sear the Patties:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the Salisbury steaks to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, until they are browned on the outside. Once browned, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
3. Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, add olive oil (or butter) and sauté the sliced onion and mushrooms (if using) over medium heat until the onion is softened and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring to coat them. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for about 2-3 minutes, until it starts to thicken.
